• What Information Do We Collect?
Through this website, current WLALA members can access services online, and visitors can sign up to join WLALA. When you join WLALA through this website, we collect your name, address, telephone number, email address, work and educational background, state bar number, and information about your level and type of involvement with WLALA. We collect work and home addresses and telephone numbers, although you may choose not to provide your home contact information. This information is published in our public online member directory if you choose to participate in that directory, as described below, unless you choose to hide certain elements of that information from public view.
Information existing members previously provided to WLALA is maintained in our databases and we publish that information in the online member directory if existing members opt in to the directory, as discussed below.
WLALA allows members to pay for initial or renewal membership dues and other services through this website. If you choose to use the website for that purpose, we will collect necessary payment information such as a credit card number, expiration date, and billing address.
• How do We Use and Share Your Information?
WLALA publishes a public online member directory on this website. For WLALA members (existing and new) who opt in to the online directory, the directory will include any of the following information, if you provide it to WLALA, by default: name, law school, company name, business contact information, preferred email, web address, home contact information, practice areas, and personal image (photo). Business contact information includes your business address, phone number, fax number, and email address. Home contact information includes your address, phone number, and fax number. If you opt in to the public online member directory, and you do not choose to hide any of these data elements (as allowed by the site), you understand that this information, including your personal image, will be freely available to the public on the Internet.
The member directory can be viewed by the public visiting WLALA’s website on the Internet. Instructions for opting in to the member directory and for hiding certain information in the member directory are listed below under the “Opting In and Opting Out” section.
WLALA uses information collected during the registration process (such as work and educational background, state bar number, information about your level and type of involvement with WLALA, and home addresses and telephone numbers) for internal WLALA purposes. For example, WLALA will use your personal information to contact you regarding WLALA events and events of other organizations that we believe may be of interest to you, and to provide you with monthly newsletters.
If you choose to purchase membership or other services through this website, your payment card information will be shared with the credit card processing companies to the extent necessary to complete the transaction.
Once a year, WLALA shares members’ names, business addresses, and state bar numbers with two organizations: the Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA) and California Women Lawyers (CWL). This information is used solely to determine WLALA’s voting rights within those organizations, and is not used by LACBA or CWL for marketing purposes. You cannot opt out of this information sharing.
This website is supported by a third-party administrator, Affiniscape. Affiniscape has access to the entire membership directory, including information that you hide from public view, but is contractually obligated to access this information only to the extent necessary to provide technical and other support for the administration of the website.
WLALA reserves the right to publish anonymous, aggregate summary information regarding member and website visitor statistics. This information will not include personally identifiable information.
WLALA does not sell any of the personal information that it collects from members or visitors. WLALA does not share any personal information with other organizations for those organizations’ marketing purposes.
To the extent permitted by law, any information collected over our website or concerning its use (personal and non-personal) may be disclosed to government authorities or third parties pursuant to a legal request, subpoena, or other legal process. We may also use or disclose your information as permitted by law to protect the rights or property of WLALA, our members, our website, its users, or third parties, or when we otherwise believe in good faith that the law requires it.
• How Can You Opt In to the Online Member Directory?
Existing and new WLALA members will be included in the online member directory only if they choose to opt in. When WLALA members log in to the website for the first time, they will be asked on the profile page to select "Member Directory" from a drop down menu if they want to be included in the WLALA online Member Directory. If members choose “None selected” in the drop down menu, they will not be included in the online member directory. New members who join through the website are given the same choice.
Even if WLALA members opt in to being included in the online member directory, WLALA members can later choose to opt out of the directory by changing their selection to “None selected.”
• How Can You Hide Certain Information from Public View in the Online Member Directory After You Opt In?
On the profile page, members can refine their public profiles by checking the “Hide” box under individual data elements (e.g., phone number, home contact information, etc.) they choose not to share with the public. The member directory updates after you make your selections and click on “Submit Registration.”
• How Can You Access or Change Your Information?
Members can update their personal information or change their preferences at any time by clicking on the “Update Profile” link at the WLALA homepage.
• Message Boards and Interactive Forums
The WLALA website may offer interactive message boards that allow members to communicate through the website. Anything you post to a message board, including any personal information that you choose to post, can be read by other users of the website and by the public on the Internet. When you post to a message board, your user ID is displayed along with your post. Your user ID is displayed as a hyperlink allowing users who click the link to view the information contained in your public profile. By posting to the message boards you consent to allowing other users to access what you have posted and to see your public profile. The contents of your postings, and your linked profile, will be freely available to the public on the Internet.
WLALA also may add blogs and other interactive forums to this website, allowing users to share information voluntarily with other website users. By posting in any blog or interactive forum, you agree that any information you choose to post will be shared with other website users and will be freely available on the Internet.
